Facebook and all the rest

I have never understood why people are so obsessed with social networking websites.  To me they have very limited usage.

Take facebook for example. I do have an account, my wife volunteered to create one for me without my approval. I have a few pictures of me there, few links to my websites, I even imported my RSS feed from my religious blog. Now what? Yes, I click on other people's profiles, I even found a few old friends.  However, that is it.

I log in into my account once in a while. Why do I do that?  I don't know. I get poked a lot, and again, I don't quite know why. I wish I could see what the deal is.

I remember in the old days I talked in chat rooms and I found that this form of social networking is a lot more real (and in real time). The interaction is not just by poking but by actually talking with other people. Some social networking do have chat built in but it is not the main focus of the sites. It seems that the new way to socialize over the net is getting further and further away from actual human contact. Something tells me that this is not so good.

I could, of course, be very wrong and some of you may find facebook and the like to be quite wonderful places where you can keep in touch with all your friends. To me it just doesn't work.

I see what you're trying to say, but if you remember there really is zero human contact over the Internet, so... whether it's chatting or poking it's not human contact either way.

Facebook is stupid for the main purpose as it has no purpose. It consists of mostly university students spying on each other's lives and people like me who were invited by university students because they wanted to show off their "cool party lifestyles" to me.

But once you're there, you're almost required to show off your pics and everything else because if you have a blank profile, you're considered boring. Now why do we care? I am not sure, but both you and I have completed those fields.

Just to remind you Smile I did not complete those fields you did!

Facebook can be used for a good reason in some cases, my wife uses it and she has reconnected from someone who she was best friends with in middle and high school, she lives around the corner and is married and has kids as well. So now they use Facebook to setup a weekly get together and then hang out.

Ohh and I had to type this in Editplus because in IE7 everytime I type a character in the text box of your site I get a javascript error message.

I guess you have a point Chris. It works just great for some people.

I'm sorry for the IE 7 errors. I've now fixed that. I'm not quite sure why the link back to your sites is not showing up correctly but hopefully I'll have that fixed too!
